Description
(Original Caption) 12/5/1938-Santa Monica, California- Strength and grace are built into these rugged center sections of Douglas airplanes as they pass down the assembly lines of the five-block-long Douglas plant. Mass production of airplanes is simplified in the large factory where an overhead mono-rail system carries parts and subassemblies. In huge hangars the ships are put together by skilled mechanics and made ready for test flights. Between 100 and 150 military planes a month can built at the two Douglas plants without addition to the existing facilities which cover 23 acres of ground and a working area of 1,315,974 square feet.
