Description
Design for a lunette with portrait of Prince Albert, circa 1863, (1881). Decorative double arch and screen surmounted by a mosaic portrait of Albert, Prince Consort (1819-1861). The two openings of the screen are framed by twisted columns of ornate metalwork in this proposal for the north end of the interior of the Prince Consort's Gallery in the Victoria & Albert Museum. Albert, prior to his death in 1861, had been an important figure in the establishing of the Museum and of the surrounding area of South Kensington, known as Albertopolis. Woodcut after a design by Godfrey Sykes. From "The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum).
