Artist's Description

(Original Caption) The students carry their books on their heads at this school in Rome. That's one of the many ways they learn poise at Italy's first Academy of Fashion Modeling, which was established to aid the country's booming fashion industry. Conducted by Countess Carmela Koefia, under the auspices of the Italian Public Educational Committee, the school trains models to show off the creations of Italy's imaginative designers. In eight months of classes, the girls learn classical movement through physical culture and dancing, helping them to show off their personal charms as well as the fashion creations. This United Press photo by Massimo Ascani, staff photographer, show the model students learning to put on airs for the sake of high fashion. Here, Countess Carmela Koefia, director of the school, shows two students how to walk properly along a display board.
