The Colossus of Rhodes, a giant statue of the sun god Helios measuring 34 metres, towers over the island's harbour, circa 250 BC. Completed in 280 BC, it was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, but was destroyed by an earthquake in 224 BC. A painting by Mario Larrinaga.
