Description
(Original Caption) Charles Lindbergh (tall figure), and the wreckage of his plane near Wedron is shown, after he had parachuted to earth. In the middle of September 1926, Charles Lindbergh was an Air Mail Pilot, known to his associates as "Lucky Lindbergh," when he became lost in a fog as he neared the Chicago end of his mail flight from St. Louis. Unable to find the field beacon, and with his gasoline almost gone, he flew as high as he could go, at the same time trying to get away from the city, righted his ship, and took to the parachute. He successfully made the leap of 5000 feet and landed near Wedron, Illinois, a short distance from the spot where his ship crashed. Having located the wreckage, he guarded the mail until relieved by officials, and called it a day.
