Artist's Description

Casket, circa 1400, (1881). Etching of a wooden box with carved lid made in Germany at the beginning of the 15th century. On the front is a man-headed eagle with the German inscription 'Mit willen dien ich' (I serve with good will); and an owl dancing and the words 'an true tans' (a regular dance). The iron mounts are replacements of circa 1850. From "The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]. Artist Frederick Albert Slocombe. (Photo by The Print Collector via Getty Images)
