Description
Buckingham House, Westminster, London, in 1775' (c1875), from 'Old and New London Illustrated, Vol IV,' by Edward Walford (Cassell Petter & Galpin, London, Paris & New York), 1878. Built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703, Buckingham House was acquired by King George III in 1761 as a private residence for Queen Charlotte. The house was greatly enlarged by architects John Nash and Edward Blore in the 19th century and became the principal royal residence in London as Buckingham Palace following the accession of Queen Victoria to the throne in 1837.
