Artist's Description

Brighthelmston, Sussex', 1825. View of boats in rough seas off the coast of Brighton, with the new chain pier on the left. The Royal Suspension Chain Pier, built in 1823, was a landing stage for packet boats to Dieppe, France. It was destroyed during a storm in 1896. The Royal Pavilion can be seen in the distance.
