Description
(Original Caption) Washington: With the advent of the U. S. supersonic transports toward the end of this decade, air travelers will discover a new world of speed, comfort and convenience. The 1,800-mile-an-hour jets, flying in smooth air at altitudes of 60,000 to 70,000 feet, will bring Europe as close to the U. S. East Coast as Minneapolis now is to New York. Tokyo will be five hours from San Francisco, instead of eleven hours by subsonic jet. The 300 passenger production version of the SST shown, will be 298 feet long with a wing span of 143 feet 4 inches and a tail feet 7 inches high. The U. S. craft differs from other supersonics in that it is built almost entirely of titanium and has a conventional tail for added stability. The Boeing Company is now constructing two prototypes at Seattle for an extensive flight test program to begin in late 1972 or early 1973.
