Artist's Description

Battle of Hanau, Germany, 30th-31st October 1813 (1882-1884). The Battle of Hanau was fought between an Austrian and Bavarian army commanded by Karl Philipp von Wrede and Napoleon's French army, retreating from Germany after its defeat at the Battle of Leipzig. Although considerably outnumbered, the French won a tactical victory and safeguarded their retreat bact to France.
