'Batman Treating with the Blacks', 1835, (1886). John Batman (1801-1839) was an Australian farmer and businessman and is considered one of the founders of the city of Melbourne. In 1835 he signed a treaty with aboriginal members of Dutigalla, a band of the Wurundjeri tribe of Port Phillip.
