Artist's Description
NEW YORK - AUGUST 1962: American folk musician and singer songwriter Peter La Farge (Oliver Albee La Farge, April 30, 1931 - October 27, 1965) poses for a portrait in August, 1962 on Sixth Avenue in New York City, New York. Peter La Farge, the son of Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and anthropologist Oliver La Farge and a Rhode Island heiress, served in the U.S. Navy throughout the Korean War, was a prizefighter, competed as a rodeo cowboy, and came to New York to study acting before pursuing a career as a folk musician and songwriter. Mentored by folk singers like Cisco Houston and Josh White, La Farge recorded topical, cowboy, and Native American-themed songs (exploiting La Farge's claim as a descendent of the Nargansett tribe of New England) for Moe Asch's Folkways Records. Several of La Farge's songs were covered by a young Bob Dylan and country singer Johnny Cash. (Photo by David Gahr/Getty Images)
