(Original Caption) 9/4/1957-Charlotte, NC- Dorothy Geraldine Counts, 15 (L) is followed by a crowd of jeering teenagers as she leaves Harding high school, with her escort, Dr R.A. Hawkins. The crowd of about 100 youths pelted Dorothy and her escort with sticks and stones, after she enrolled at the White high school in Charlotte. An 18 year old White boy and a girl of 15 were arrested for hitting and spitting at the Negro girl when she left the school.
