Artist's Description

'A Savage Pastime; or, the Morality of Field Sports', 1870. The rural labourer doffs his hat to the upper class rider who is preparing to set off with the Hunt. A beagle stands to attention in anticipation of the chase. This cartoon illustrates the beginning of pressure by groups opposed to blood-sports, and shows how the moral aims of such groups may not entirely accord with the needs of rural communities. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 26, 1870. (Photo by The Cartoon Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
