Artist's Description
'A Plaister for Pam.', 1858. Like a whipped schoolboy, and rubbing his bruises, Palmerston is receiving from Mr Punch (who had been vociferous in his opposition to the Bill) a 'consolation' prize for his government's work in helping to bring about the Treaty of Paris. This was signed by Britain, Austria, France, Prussia, Russia, Sardinia and Turkey in March 1856, and signalled the end of the Crimean War. 'Doctor Punch. Poor Old Boy! I didn't mean to hit you quite so hard, but you must really be more careful - here's a nice plaister for you'. The events followed Palmerston's attempt to introduce the Conspiracy to Murder Bill, which left him thoroughly beaten and led to his resignation as Prime Minister.
