Artist's Description
John Bennett Lawes, English agriculturalist, 1882. Lawes (1814-1900) began experimental farming on his estate at Rothamstead, Hertfordshire. In 1843 he founded the now famous Rothamsted Experimental Research Station. He used artificial fertilisers and in 1842 built a factory at Deptford to manufacture 'super-phosphates'.
