(Original Caption) Hill Gail, in the great tradition of the Calumet Farm, crosses the finish line for a thrilling victory in the 78th running of the Kentucky Derby, held at Churchill Downs last Saturday. Eddie Arcaro steered Hill Gail's nose under the wire, a two-length winner over Dixiana's Sub Fleet, with Blue Man third. It was jockey Arcaro's fifth derby victory Ben Jones' sixth. The time for the mile and one quarter race was 2:01 3/5, one-fifth of a second off the great Whirlaway's derby record set in 1941. It equaled the second fastest time established by Middleground in 1950.
