Artist's Description
LEXINGTON, VA - SEPTEMBER 1977: American country blues and folk guitarist and singer songwriter Elizabeth 'Libba' Cotten (née Nevills, January 5, 1893 - June 29, 1987) poses for a portrait in September 1977 at folk musician Mike Seeger's home in Lexington, Virginia. Elizabeth Cotten, a self-taught songwriter and lefthanded guitarist with a unique picking style, was a domestic for the family of musicologist Charles Seeger and composer Ruth Crawford Seeger, parents of folk musicians and folklorists Peggy Seeger and Mike Seeger. Cotten was encouraged to pursue a musical career by the family, recording albums for Folkways Records with production overseen by Mike Seeger, and performing concerts and at folk festivals for decades, including Pete Seeger (half-brother to Mike and Peggy Seeger) and George Wein's Newport Follk Festivals.
