Artist's Description
NEW YORK - AUGUST 1962: American folk musician and singer songwriter Peter LaFarge (Oliver Albee La Farge, April 30, 1931 - October 27, 1965) poses for a portrait in August, 1962 in Greenwich Village in New York City, New York. Peter LaFarge, the son of Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and anthropologist Oliver LaFarge and a Rhode Island heiress, served in the U.S. Navy throughout the Korean War, was a prizefighter, competed as a rodeo cowboy, and came to New York to study acting before pursuing a career as a folk musician and songwriter. Mentored by folk singers like Cisco Houston and Josh White, LaFarge recorded topical, cowboy, and Native American-themed songs (exploiting LaFarge's claim as a descendent of the Nargansett tribe of New England) for Moe Asch's Folkways Records. Several of LaFarge's songs were covered by a young Bob Dylan and country singer Johnny Cash. (Photo by David Gahr/Getty Images)
