(Original Caption) In Czechoslovakia, girls and boys begin their life work at an early age. When American youngsters are graduating from public school, these Czech children are well advanced in the work of their chosen trade. This unusual set of photographs shows Czech children working as apprentices at the great jewel centre of Turnau. Boys and girls are both admitted to the guild and are instructed in the art and science of diamond cutting and jewel setting. The art passes from father to son and if no son, then to a daughter. Hence the dexterity in handling delicate instruments and tools and the skill and adeptness of their work. Turnau is the seat of the famous Bohemian jewel centre, which supplies in a great measure the wants of all Europe. Photo shows boys and girls together at work in the jewel plant.
