Artist's Description

William Penn, English Quaker colonist, treating with Native North Americans on the site of the city of Philadelphia, 1682 (1771-1772). Penn (1644-1718) founded Philadelphia, the 'city of brotherly love', in 1682. The site was previously occupied by the Delaware Indians. The man at bottom right holds a Pipe of Peace.
