Description
West Staircase, Leading to the Ceramic Gallery', circa 1876, (1881). The West Staircase in the South Kensington Museum, decorated with Frank Moody's ceramic tile mosaic pavement, with majolica panels on the walls. Five panels on the right bear the inscriptions 'PHIDIAS', 'RAPHAEL', 'TITIAN', 'REMBRANDT' and 'TURNER'. The Della Robbia ware, a modern version of a Renaissance technique, was produced by the English ceramic company Minton, Hollins & Co. From "The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum).
