Artist's Description

(Original Caption) Grovers Mill, NJ, 10/31/38: William Dock, 76, stands ready with his trusty shotgun to ward off the attack of any strange creatures from Mars, who were supposed to have landed in Grovers Mill during an "invasion" of the country. People fled this area when fictitious news bulletins broadcast over the Mercury Theater of the Air by actor Orson Welles during a dramatization of H.G. Wells' book "The War of the Worlds" said that the first space ship carrying the invading Martians landed here. The Federal Communications Commission is investigating the broadcast.
