Description
'Vulcan's Best Customer', 1866. Peace remarks Not much doing, I Suppose, Mr. Vulcan? To which Vulcan replies Doing! Thanks to You, Miss, I've A'most More Work than I Can Manage. The figure of Peace, holding her olive branch, is told by Vulcan that her efforts have had the paradoxical effect of creating work for him. On the wall next to Vulcan is a list of customers including arms manufacturers such as Krupp, Palliser, Dryse and Snider Enfield. The recent peace between Prussia and Austria, and Italy and Austria, allowed time for the various European countries to organise the rearmament of their forces. War was now increasingly reliant upon the new weapons that included needle-guns and heavy cannon. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 29. 1866.
