Artist's Description

In the Indian state of Kerala, the New Year is celebrated on Vishu (also a harvest festival) on the 14th of April. The day is started off by first viewing the "Vishu Kani" an arrangement of rice, coconuts, fruit and vegetables of the harvest, coins, tokens of silver and gold, the golden yellow flowers of the Golden Shower tree called "Konnappoo",etc. The belief is that this view of prosperity, first thing on the first day of the New Year would ensure that the rest of the year continues to be so.
