Description
VILLI in the SMALL INTESTINE (ILEUM, Human), SIMPLE COLUMNAR EPITHELIUM and INTESTINAL GLANDS, 50X. This image shows: villi, simple columnar epithelium, intestinal glands (crypts of Lieberkuhn), lamina propria, mucosa, submucosa, numerous goblet cells, lumen. The Villi greatly increase the surface absorptive area in the small intestine thus increasing the absorption of nutrients into the blood stream. Most of the absorption of nutrients occurs in the small intestine. The Goblet Cells secretes mucus (a lubricant).
