Artist's Description

'Two Manifestoes', 1877. The ghost of the first President of France's Third Republic, Louis Adolphe Thiers, rises from the tomb. The other figure is of the man who succeeded Thiers, Marshal M'Mahon. Only a couple of weeks after Thiers's death on 3rd September 1877, M'Mahon issued a Manifesto to the French people, the tone of which suggested that he was being influenced by advisers who were hostile to the Republic. In response to this, Thiers's own election address to the people, which had been prepared by him just prior to his death in readiness for his own campaign, set out all his reasons for the retention of the Republic and the adverse consequences of returning to a monarchy. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 6, 1877. (Photo by The Cartoon Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
