Description
(Original Caption) Thomas Edison is shown here in the chemistry lab at his West Orange, New Jersey plant. America at the time of the first world war was cut off from her foreign supplies of carbolic acid and coal tar derivatives. It was Edison who devised a method for producing synthetic carbolic acid and it was he who established plants for the manufacture of coal tar derivatives. His work is recognized as having laid the groundwork for the important development of the coal tar industry in the nation. Undated photograph.
