Wait till it Busts Out. President Andrew Johnson (who had taken office on the assassination of Abraham Lincoln) laconically reassures Miss Canada that the matter will burn itself out without intervention. The American branch of the Irish Fenian movement had recently planned to invade Canada and, by the beginning of April 1866, had crossed the border from America. The American government had promised to cooperate in quashing the plot. From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 7, 1866. (Photo by The Cartoon Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
