Description
'The Wrong of Search, or The Luggage Question', 1867. Napoleon III presents an invitation to the Paris International Exhibition to Britannia, who states she would be pleased to accept provided that her luggage is not searched. As this cartoon is in response to Mr Punch's suggestion that the right of search should be abandoned, this is a message to Mr Disraeli, standing behind Britannia, that he should raise the matter with the French authorities. The date for the Paris International Exhibition was fast approaching. Whilst passports were not required for Britains travelling to France, the French authorities still retained the right to search visitors' luggage.
