Artist's Description

'The tomb of the favourite Sultan of Akbar Khan at Agra', 1847. The Taj Mahal in India, the great marble mausoleum built by Shah Jahan (1592-1666), Mughal emperor, for his wife Arjumand Banu Begam (died 1631) called Mumtaz Mahal (Favourite of the Palace). The Taj Mahal is generally considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements of Indian and Persian architectures. Shah Jahan was buried in the Taj with his wife. Illustration from The History of China and India, by Miss Corner, (Dean and Co, London, 1847). (Photo by The Print Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
