Spring-Heeled Jack, a devil-like character of English urban legend makes an appearance to a terrified chimneysweep, circa 1850. Jack was first sighted in London in 1837, and was described as tall and thin, with fiery eyes, claws, and a capacity for making prodigious leaps. An engraving from a 'Penny Dreadful'.
