Description
The Rock Fort Temple of Tiruchirapalli, India, 1895. As seen from the east. The Rock Fort is a huge outcrop of rock of 83 metres high, which is the only outcrop in the otherwise flat land of the city. For this reason, the city is also called Rock City. On top of the rock is the Ucchi Pillayar Koil, a temple dedicated to Vinayaka (Ganesha), from where one can enjoy a panoramic view of Tiruchirapalli. From The Universal Geography with Illustrations and Maps, division XV, written by Elisee Reclus and published by Virtue & Co. Limited (London, 1895).
