The President and the Japanese Embassy', circa 1869. The Japanese Embassy to the United States was dispatched in 1860 by the Tokugawa shogunate (bakufu). Numerous receptions were held in its honor, including one at the White House, where President James Buchanan presented the Shogun with a gold watch engraved with his likeness.
