Artist's Description

'The Political Polo Match', 1885. Mr Joseph Chamberlain, from the Radical group within the Liberal Party, and the Conservative Lord Randolph Churchill, battle it out on the polo field. Churchill had recently said in a speech that, whilst he disagreed with almost all of Chamberlains political views, he saw him as an honest politician. However, the intense spirit of competition between the two politicians persisted, despite their acknowledged respect for each other. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 9, 1885.
