The horsehead is an area of dust masking an emission nebula running from north to south by the star Alnitak in the belt of the constellation Orion. The flame nebula is the glowing region directly beneath Alnitak. This is a very difficult target to observe visually, requiring extremely an extremely dark sky and, often, a filter to attenuate natural sky glow.
