Artist's Description

The European Concert', 1880. The European Powers, including Turkey, Germany and Russia, form the orchestra for what became known as 'the European Concert'. This came out of the Queen's Speech at the opening of the first Session of Parliament after the 1880 General Election. The Liberal Leader, Gladstone, made it known that he intended that he and his government would 'act in concert' with other European Powers, especially with regard to the Eastern Question, represented here by Turkey (holding the cymbals). From Punch, or the London Charivari, June 5, 1880. (Photo by The Cartoon Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
