The Duke of Cambridge presenting the Crimean Medal to French soldiers, 1856. George William Frederick Charles, 2nd Duke of Cambridge (1819-1904), English soldier and cousin of Queen Victoria, commanded a division of the British army in the Crimea in 1854 during the Crimean War (Russo-Turkish War) 1853-1856. The allied forces of Britain, France and Turkey defeated the Russians. Watched by the French emperor Napoleon III (1808-1893) mounted on a white horse, the Duke is decorating French troops in the Place de Carrousel, Paris, 15 January 1856.
