The Battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia, 1 July 1862 (1862-1867). The gunboats 'Monitor' and 'Galena' covering the retreat. The Battle of Malvern Hill was the last engagement of the Peninsula Campaign in Virginia in 1862. The Confederates suffered heavy casualties attempting to take the hill, allowing the Union Army of the Potomac to complete an orderly retreat.
