Artist's Description

The baker kneading dough on the lid of a flour bin, 1823. In the background the oven is being heated by burning faggots, like the bundle of wood bottom right. When the oven was up to temperature, the ashes would be raked out and loaves placed inside using a 'peel', one of the flat wooden paddle-like implements leaning against the oven.
