Description
(Original Caption) 1/1/36- The 1st means man had of telling the time of day was by the shadow cast by the sun. In ancient times vertically mounted wooden, stone or metal sticks were used, causing the sun to cast a shadow on a plate marked with a scale. The sundial was practically the only timekeeper until the 15th Centrury. The Babylonians claimed Borosus (600 B.C.) was the inventor of the sundial. The Greek tales Anoximadros & Tudoxos improved upon it, but Rome didn't have it's 1st sundial until c. 260 B.C.
