Artist's Description

Mississippi state troopers stand guard as a University of Mississippi student shouts insults at U. S. marshals surrounding the University's Administration Building, awaiting the arrival of James Meredith, the first black student at the University. When Meredith was escorted by 15 marshals, after dark, into a campus dormitory, a riot broke out which left 2 people dead and 75 injured before the crowd was driven back by tear gas and bayonets.Image provided by Getty Images.
