Description
Vulcan and the Cyclopes in a scene from “Stories From Virgil” by the Reverend Alfred J. Church, M.A., with illustrations from the designs of Bartolomeo Pinelli (1781 – 1835). Published by Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, London, in 1879. Venus has asked her husband Vulcan to make new armour for her son Aeneas and he instructs the Cyclopes to work on the armour in his subterranean workshop. The Cyclopes (the singular is Cyclops) is a race of fierce, one-eyed beings with great strength, all experienced blacksmiths. This illustration portrays the Cyclopes as having two eyes.
