Artist's Description

(Original Caption) 6/14/1946-Photo shows the "Slinky," a toy invented by Civil Engineer Richard R. James of Philadelphia after he watched a steel spring roll off a war plant table, bounce on the floor, do a number of flip-flops, wriggle, quiver and finally lie still. The "Slinky" lives up to its name by eerily "walking down" a flight of stairs- end-over-end, step by step, until it reaches bottom, where it gives a final convulsive jerk and rolls over on its side.
