Artist's Description

'Sir Walter Raleigh', 1775. Raleigh (1554-1618) was an English adventurer and writer, a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, who knighted him in 1585. Accused of treason by Elizabeth's successor, James I, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London and eventually put to death in 1618.
