Sir J. Holt', (1642-1710), 1830. Sir John Holt (1642-1710) English lawyer and served as Lord Chief Justice of England from 17 April 1689 to his death, educated at Gray's Inn and Oriel College, Oxford, credited with playing a major role in ending the prosecution of witches in English law.
