(Original Caption) Hillary Reaches South Pole. Antarctica: Sir Edmund Hillary, conqueror of Mount Everest, radioed Jan. 3rd that he has reached the South Pole. He is the winner of a historic trans-Antarctic race and the first man to make the overland trek since Scott died in the attempt in 1912. His radio message was received at the I.G.Y. Committee headquarters in Wellington, New Zealand.
