Artist's Description

French troops under Lieutenant-General Charles Oudinot make their first attack on Rome near the Porta Cavellegiere, May 1849. The action was a response to the founding of the Roman Republic, and resulted in a two-month siege, after which the city surrendered and the authority of the Pope was restored.
