Artist's Description

circa 1929: Dockers at John Brown's shipyard working on the propeller shafts of the Canadian Pacific liner the 'Empress of Scotland'. They are the largest propeller shafts ever made for a ship. The Empress series of liners were built for the Canadian Pacific Railway to provide a 15-day journey between London and Tokyo via Canada, as part of a scheme to develop the CPR into a general travel company.
