Artist's Description

Shell Mound People, 4000-2000 BC (c1880). The Shell Mound People, or Kitchen-Middeners, were hunter-gatherers of the late Mesolithic and early Neolithic period. They get their name from the distinctive mounds (middens) of shells and other kitchen debris they left behind. Similar remains have been found in North and Southern Europe, Iberia, North Africa, and North and South America. (Photo by Ann Ronan Pictures/Print Collector/Getty Images)
